A minimum of 13 passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and handling of the country's key government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine what caused this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The official noted plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Key Undertaking of Past Leadership

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the previous administration, whose term concluded the prior year. This venture was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southern region.

Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.

Project Execution and Safety Concerns

The building of both rail lines was managed by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its duties in civilian works. They were built at an rapid rate, beating forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously fueled ongoing questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This involves an prior accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also experienced two non-deadly derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the catastrophe, the chief of a major opposition party called for an prompt halt in the development and management of all comparable projects.

This halt was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the situation "requires prompt explanations."

In response, the national leader maintained that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
