Pentagon Investigation Finds Defense Secretary Placed Troops in Jeopardy with Signal Chat.

A long-awaited Department of Defense review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by disclosing secret intelligence in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen against Houthi militants. This discussion was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat allegedly included Senator JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and then-national security adviser Mike Waltz. The investigation did not examine the conduct of Hegseth, as the other participants do not work at the Pentagon.

Signal is a commercially offered communication application that was not approved for handling sensitive material.

Serious Risk to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the intelligence shared by Hegseth was classified and posed a risk to the safety of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the document also noted that Hegseth had the ability to downgrade the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally exercised that authority.

Secretary's Response

The informed individual said that Hegseth refused to be interviewed by the investigators. Instead, he submitted a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only shared details that would not have endangered personnel or compromised the operation. He further stated that he had the right to downgrade information and considered the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The finalized investigation has been provided to Congress. An publicly releasable copy is expected to be made public later this week.
