Meteorological devices containing numerous packages of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was compelled to shut down for hours when dozens of them drifted across the national airspace.
Flight Disruptions
The airport closure led to thirty canceled flights affecting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that delays might continue throughout Monday.
National Security Measures
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with a pair of them ending up right above the main terminal.
Up to 14 of the meteorological devices launched over the weekend drifted across the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and close to the border with Belarus.
Smuggled Items Retrieved
No fewer than 11 balloons containing numerous containers of black-market cigarettes have since been recovered, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to border security officials.
Regional Smuggling Pattern
Although causing problems, authorities noted that "Meteorological equipment transporting smuggled items - tobacco products originating in Belarus - are common occurrences in neighboring countries."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Meanwhile, the border area of Poland, which also borders Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its adjacent country employing the weather devices.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Meteorological balloons are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Authorities continued that "Our services' aim is to confiscate the maximum possible quantities of contraband and to apprehend coordinators and participants so that such operations become economically unsustainable and create minimal risk to passenger aircraft."
European Tensions
These airspace violations occur during a period of heightened tension in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have caused EU officials to accelerate discussions about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
